This morning I was reading about the advertising history of hormel Dinty Moore Beef Stew and was happily surprised to find the answer to a question I had thought of many times as a child. Why was there a thumbprint on the label?
As a child my family frequently went camping and fishing as well as traveled across the country in our various campers that changed through the years as our family grew. Camping trips always included Dinty Moore Beef Stew as it was a quick and easy way to fill up 4 hungry kids with a meal my Mom knew we would love. The pan used to heat the stew was always completely scraped clean with nary a carrot coin nor even a teaspoon of gravy left.
Many times over the years I had wondered about the thumbprint that was stamped on each can. It was part of the Dinty Moore marketing but I never knew why. As of this morning, I know! In the 30s, characters Jiggs and Maggie from “Bringing Up Father” were used in Dinty Moore advertisements. Later, a lumber jack character was introduced, proclaiming “First name’s Dinty, last name’s Moore,” who placed his signature thumbprint on every can. That's where the signature came from!
Utilizing celebrities proved to be a popular route in promoting Hormel chili. Ray Milland, star of “Copper Canyon,” appeared in print ads. In the 80s, pro football player Fran Tarkenton was tapped to promote Hormel chili. I'm showing my age when I admit that the only commercials I really remember had Fran Tarkenton in them. Yes, I'm a child of the 80's.
Not only does Hormel beef stew has remained the top selling stew in the nation while many of my readers might recognize their other top selling product; chili. Hormel chili has topped nachos and filled the bowls of American families for generations. Both Dinty Moore products and Hormel chili taste great in hearty meal recipes, such as Chili Cheese Dip, Chili-mac, Easy Shepherd’s Pie and Chili and 3-Cheese Fondue.
