I Hear You Knocking But You Can't Come In!

Ah, the 'budget friendly' ways of dissuade the bird from pecking at our windows are not helping. Yes, the little yellow bird is still happily knocking at our doors and windows despite the hawk pictures, the shades drawn, the magazine pages and things I've hung in the window to show him it is, indeed a window.
However, it doesn't seem that he is 'attacking' the window. Although I've often heard they are just attacking their reflections, this doesn't ring true in our case. This bird is not attacking, is not hitting hard or slamming himself into the windows and doors. No, he is pecking and knocking... continually. He doesn't even seem to care if we get close until we get 'too' close and then he flies away. But the front door, side lights, patio door and windows are all under his watchful eye.
Last summer we had a similar situation although the bird in question wasn't going for the windows. He was knock, knock, knocking on our door. Our steel, painted, no windows at all door! So it's not a reflection issue or an attack issue, but these little guys are relentless in trying to get in.
My neighbors probably think we are strange for papering our glass windows and doors with photos and ripped magazine pages, but I continually try to show the bird he is not welcome here and hopefully he'll go elsewhere. Perhaps to one of my neighbors homes so they can understand why we are putting up shadows of hawks in our windows!
