I've always loved that we have a Meals on Wheels program in the United States and had always (wrongly) assumed it was widespread enough to reach almost every town in America. How wrong I was!

What a great program to have healthy, hot meals delivered to the most precious piece of walking wisdom and history we have; our elderly generation! There are many different reasons an elderly friend, relative or neighbor cannot provide a hot, healthy meal for themselves. When a volunteer delivers that meal to them they are not only getting nourishment that perhaps they aren't capable of cooking for themselves, or they 'forget' to eat or just have lost the will... but the volunteer also is serving another need. A need for a moment in the day when this person has another human checking on them and their safety as well as having someone to talk to, even if only for a brief minute. Sometimes it's the only interaction they have all day.
