Quick and Easy Homemade: A Throw Pillow for the Couch

This week I stopped in at the fabric store to find fabric for a project for the Family Room. I fell in love with some espresso colored taffeta. I fell even harder when I saw it was on sale! Since it was 50% off I went ahead and got an extra cut which of course ends up to be 'free' when you look at the savings.

This week I was antsy and wanted to do 'something' but I wasn't sure what. I decided to cut a couple pieces of of the taffeta fabric out and make two throw pillows for the couch.

I'm never one to be precise or follow directions and if a project requires a lot of planning, is too difficult or time consuming I probably won't do it - at least the way it's supposed to be done. LOL. So here is how to make a quick pillow in about 30 minutes.

Needed:

Fabric - squared, cut to the size you desire with about 1 inch extra around all sides to allow for the seam
Stuffing

I didn't want to measure so I took a double thickness of fabric and pulled the corner up to 'square' it in a size I thought would be good.

To add character to my pillow I then cut diagonally from corner to corner so I had 4 triangles instead of 2 squares. I then resewed the triangles back together so there was a diagonal seam from corner to corner just to give it a nice look.

Put the right sides together and sew a straight 5/8" seam around 3 1/2 sides of the pillow, leaving an opening to insert stuffing later. Now turn it 'right side out' and prepare to stuff. I used a quilt stuffing to line the inside so it would be smooth. I didn't measure, I simply laid the pillow casing on top and cut it out to size.

Next, use stuffing to completely stuff your pillow being sure to push stuffing into the four corners and then evenly to fill.

Fold the opening seam in and pin in place. You can hand sew the opening closed or if you are a bit lazy like me, I push the filling back a bit, and firmly holding the seam in place I sew the opening closed using my machine. This does leave a tiny lip of a seam (about 1/4 of an inch) but it's quick and easy and no one is going to be inspecting my pillows that closely!

Cost: The cost of your fabric - mine was about $2.50 per pillow
