Banker Boxes for Cheap and Easy Filing
7.27.2007
I had a question put to me about what I use to store files and papers in our home. I use the ever popular 'bankers box'. Over the past 19 years of marriage these have been a constant in our home. A couple of years they were hard to find and I had to spend more to purchase a plastic version with a lid, but for the most part I buy a 2 or 3 box package of this style box. They come flat, for anywhere from $3-7 and you fold them into place. They have a lid and when folded correctly are sturdy and durable. I love that they all stack beautifully as they are all the same size even when buying different brands (as I've obviously had to do through 19 years of marriage and living all over the country).
I do use a fireproof box for important papers like birth certificates, copies of our will, our passports and such. The waterproof plastic bankers box holds our real estate papers and copies from our homes. Receipts, every day papers we need to keep, copies of bills, medical, dental, school, utilities, etc. all are filed in these banker boxes, each marked with the year as well as the city and state we lived in at the time.
Organized and very, very frugal!
